FDA 510(k) clears Philosys Gmate glucometer for Android

Medical and diagnostic device developer and manufacturer Philosys said today it won FDA 510(k) clearance for its Gmate Smart blood glucose monitoring system and associated application for Google (NSDQ:GOOG) Android devices.

The Gmate Smart is designed to plus into the headphone jack on compatible smartphones to provide blood glucose test results, the New York-based company said.

“As cloud technology grows, Philosys is working to create an App-to-Cloud secure connection in the next generation of updates. Not only is Gmate SMART changing diabetes care by improving health and lifestyle, but it’s also affordable. Most retail pharmacies are selling both the meter and box of 50 count strips at a low cost,” senior sales veep Mike Tickle said in prepared remarks.

The device is the size of a quarter and integrates diabetes management and glucose data into the associated smartphone.

The partnered application allows users to set goals, graph gluocse data and send test results to family members or healthcare providers, the company said.

The device won approval for Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) iOS devices in August 2014.
